The Everton versus Liverpool FA Cup encounter of 91 was one of the best matches in the history of the competition. The first opportunity of the game went to Everton’s John Ebbrell and his missed opportunity looked like proving costly as the reds took control of the match. On the half hour mark, Ian Rush dispossessed Kevin Ratcliffe and sprinted clear with a through run on goal. Rush’s shot was amazingly cleared off the line; however Peter Beardsley scored the rebound.
One minute into the second half, the home side leveled as Graeme Sharp headed home from close range. Peter Beardsley scored a great strike mid way through the second half to provide Liverpool a 2-1 advantage. One minute later, an un accurate back pass produced another goal from Graeme Sharp and the game was level once again. Liverpool regained the advantage in the 78th minute when Molby’s cross was superbly flicked in by the scourge of Everton, Ian Rush. In the remaining minute, Tony Cottee ran into the penalty box and sent in a clinical finish inside the Liverpool far post.
In the first period of extra time, John Barnes scored a wonder solo goal however minutes later, Tony Cottee scored his second of the match and the result ended 4-4.
