This match proved to be Johnny Carey’s last match in charge at Everton; however they could not have given him a more spectacular send off. It was an Everton team who were struggling for form; however everything came good at Goodison Park on this night. Roy Vernones hit a fine hat trick which helped Everton to victory. The goal of the match was by Billy Binham who hit a stunning volley which left the Cardiff goal keeper with no chance of saving. The other four goals of the tie came from Jimmy Gabriel, Alex Young, Derek temple and Dennis Stevens. Carey was later on sacked by Everton chairmen, John Moores, despite this memorable victory.
